At approximately 02:40 am, the Shelton Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a house on fire on Hawley Rd. Upon the arrival of the first fire unit, a large volume of smoke was observed coming from the home. As apparatus arrived, members from Engine 32 deployed a 1 3/4” hand line to the seat of the fire which was located in the basement. As fire suppression was taking place, other members conducted a search of the home for victims, and additional fire spread. No victims were located and minor fire extension was found to the 1st floor. Once the fire was extinguished, an extensive overhaul was conducted to ensure there was no hidden fire in the walls or ceiling. Both of the occupants were able to evacuate the home prior to the arrival of the FD. They were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Approximately 30 members operated on the scene under the command of Assistant Chief Joe Constantino (Car 3) with Engines 32, 52, 2, Ladder 51, Squad 1, Rescue 30, Cars 1, 5, and 6. The scene was cleared by 04:30 am. Mutual aid from Derby, Monroe, and Nichols was used to cover the Shelton companies working the fire.
